SPA + COMMUNITY CENTER

This Spa and Community Center is located in Red Hook, Brooklyn, an area on the brink of gentrification. As a result, the once decaying site is slowly transforming into a tourist destination. Because the programs and typologies of the tourist vs. resident differ greatly with respect to their expectations and intentions, each group operates on its own surface of movement. However there still exists interdependency between the groups in which their distinct experiences simultaneously alter and influence the others. This project exploits that relationship to create - through excavation and the revealing/concealing of multiple landscapes - a new urban layering in which each separate surface not only contains its own programs, but also informs the others, while revealing the above or below conditions.
