HIGHRISE HOUSING
Fall 2007 | Seoul Design Studio 401
This project critiques the current high rise housing conditions in Seoul, South Korea. It aims to create mixed unit housing with variations of apartment and public space typologies. Beginning with an existing unit plan, each program is given a range of allowed deviation from its original location, generating endless unit configurations. From these, a palette of 25 apartments is created, with a range of "tight" to "loose" units. As units become more tight or more loose, overlapping or expansion begins to occur, triggering opportunities for inserting new programs, redefining the relationship between units, and creating new breeds of public or private spaces. Using these 25 plans, a palette of buildings is also created such that each building has various degrees of vertical or horizontal communities, with a gradation from most private to most public across the site.
